Part A

Select a treatment approach for violent offenders that is of particular interest to you.

Select at least one scholarly article from a peer-reviewed journal that discusses the treatment approach you selected—an approach that demonstrates efficacy in treating violent offender populations.

Reflect on the treatment outcome models as they relate to the research article you selected. Think about how the treatment approach you selected might be evaluated using the treatment outcome models.

Select one treatment outcome model that you think would be most effective for measuring the success of your selected treatment approach and consider why.

Give a description of the two real-life examples you selected. Then explain the consequences of inadequate and/or incorrect forensic psychological evaluations in criminal matters. Finally, use the examples you selected to illustrate and justify your points. Be specific and reference Learning Resources.

Part B

Synthesize what you have examined concerning the concepts of anger, stress, and aggression as they relate to violent offenders. Think about the implications of this relationship to the treatment of violent offenders.

Aggression, Violence and Criminality

A. Aggression, Violence and Crime

Some of the most heinous crimes ever recorded almost always involve high measures of aggression and violence. Since aggression in social psychology is defined as (Allen & Anderson, 2017), "a behavior that is intended to harm another person who is motivated to avoid that harm" and with violence deemed as "an extreme form of aggression that has severe physical harm as its goal," then it goes without saying that at least, social psychologically, aggression and violence are, more often than not, in concert being part of a continuum that gets more violent over severity. In the 1984 classic study of Hare and McPherson (Hare & McPherson, 1984)entitled "Violent and Aggressive Behavior by Criminal Psychopaths," the duo established that psychopaths commit violent and aggressive criminal acts in comparison to other criminals fuelled by thrill-seeking, lack of control, disregard of societal conventions, poor judgment and lack of empathy, remorse, guilt or shame. While research over the years has expanded these claims, what remains is that violence as the most extreme form of aggression leads to criminality. In the US, the law defines murder, manslaughter, rape & sexual assault, robbery and aggravated assault as violent crimes and statista.com (statista research dept., 2020) reports that in 2019, there were over 1.2 million violent crimes committed in the US, with 16,425 murder and manslaughter cases. This means that in 2019, 16,425 criminals were convicted of violence and aggression that led to death of their victims.

Bearing this in mind, what treatment can the offender undertake to lower down and if possible eradicate violent and aggressive behavior? If propensity towards aggression and its worst form - violence - is the result of psychopathy, a mental illness that negates logic, reason, sympathy and responsibility, then it is possible to employ mechanisms that can impose forms of logic and the ability to empathize in minds prone to aggression and violence to effect behavior. The Department of Psychiatry in England's University of Oxford believe that while "potential mechanisms connecting mental illness and violent and criminal behaviour are still poorly understood," (University of Oxford, 2021), the relationship is there. Thus they view incarcerated violent ...
