G. Stanley Hall's developmental theory described adolescence as a very turbulent time for youth which was charged with conflict and mood swings. This psychological theory of adolescence was believed to be the time of rebellion, expression of feelings, idealism, passion, ambitiousness, and of suffering. His belief was that the age of adolescence is a time when there is a feeling of contradictory emotions and actions, feeling an increased urge to rebel against authority, while looking for a role model that can help them in their endeavors.

Three key aspects of his view is conflict with parents, mood disruptions, and risky behaviors. Evidence supports a similar view that can also consider individual differences as well as cultural variations. Though not all adolescents experience this "storm-and-stress" time, and tends to be lower in traditional cultures than in the West, when it does occur, it is more likely during adolescence (ages 12 to 25) than at other ages (Dahl, & Hariri, 2005).
