Research indicates that smoking during pregnancy and postpartum pregnancy is harmful to the fetus and well being of both the fetus and mother (Zapaka, Pbert, Stockland, Ockene, Goins, & Bonollo, 2000). For instance, smoking increases a baby' low birth weight and pre-term health. In addition, it poses a risk to infants of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SID), and other illnesses such as: (a) asthma, (b) upper respiratory infection, and (c) hospitalization for the presence of bronchitis (p.74).
