Wundt's Laboratory:

Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920) was a German psychologist who is commonly referred to as the "Founder of modern scientific psychology" or the "Father of Experimental Psychology" (Psych Online, 1997). Born and raised in Neckarau Germany, Wundt trained professionally as a psychologist and wrote his notable book on psychology which dealt with sensory perceptions. In 1879, Wundt founded and designed a laboratory at the University of Leipzig, the first of its kind in the world dedicated to conducting research and experiments in psychology. This laboratory became one of the world's best equipped and largest laboratory which had a critical impact and interests in psychology for psychology students all over the world, first for the German students then for British and American students who traveled to this lab to understand how psychological experiments were being carried out (Northern Illinois University, 2011; Human intelligence, 2007). In 1879, Wundt's laboratory was designated formally as an institute where many first generation psychologists all over the world were trained. In the early years, all other laboratories that were established were closely modeled to the Wundt's laboratory model (Human intelligence, 2007; Psych Online, 1997).

The purpose of the laboratory was to understand the working of the human mind and consciousness where Wundt's approach to experiments in psychology was to separate the study of psychology from sciences and philosophy to experimental psychology.
