Abstract: Erik Erikson's psychosocial model has had a great deal of influence on the study of the identity formation process. Erikson's psychosocial model presents eight stages an individual proceeds throughout his or her life with each stage involving a crisis that the individual must face. Erikson believed that identity formation is significantly influenced by the social, cultural, and historical context in which it occurs. This dissertation reviews Erikson's theories and the literature focusing on ethnic identity development and female development in order to discuss the applicability of Erikson's theories to Hispanic female identity development.
