Initially infants are unable to consume and digest solid food. In infancy breast milk is the ideal infant food since it is always sterile and at body temperature. Breast milk contains more iron, Vitamin C and Vitamin A than cow's milk. Breast milk is more easily digested than cow's milk or formula, which means that breast fed babies have fewer allergies and stomach upsets than bottle -fed babies. Despite these facts many infant formulas and powdered milks are also good for babies. Bottle fed babies are able to survive and thrive without ever having been breast fed.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics , In the early weeks up to age 3 months, newborns should nurse about 8-12 times every 24 hours, usually for about 10-15 minutes. The number of feedings per every 24 hours should slighly decrease. By ages 4-5 months babies should recive 5-7 ounces of breast milk per feeding and be fed 5 times per very 24 hours.The rule of thumb for fomula is 2.5 ounces per pound in body weight in 24 hours or 3-4 ounces per feed at 2 months and beyond.
