These results reinforced a study by West, Hosie, and Mackey (2), which found that mental health agencies often require and/or expect mental health counselors to diagnose and treat as well as to perform duties that are consistent with the medical model. In October 1997 the American Counseling Association (ACA) adopted the following definition of professional counseling: ?The Practice of Professional Counseling: The application of mental health, psychological, or human development principles, through cognitive, affective, behavioral or systemic intervention strategies, that address wellness, personal growth, or career development, as well as pathology?.
