It is the duty of the counselor to follow the code of ethics and develop their own therapeutic counseling approach and assessments that are effective. "The therapist functions as a catalyst and a guide who helps clients understand how their beliefs and attitudes influence the way they feel and act" (Corey, 2009, p.291). The code of ethics provides the foundation for professional counselors to follow and be informed of their required ethical behavior. Record keeping within the counseling field provides many benefits along with ethical conflicts that may arise. The question as to "who owns the counseling records?" arises due to the debate of the client, therapist and counseling agency involved. This brings up many ethical concerns in which leads us to having ethical codes to follow as counseling professionals.
