When it works well, it is very clean - well, aside from the nuclear waste that is. As far as energy efficiency, it tends to be high. Small amounts of fuel (U 235 or Pu 239) can be used for relatively long periods.The actual creation of steam to drive turbines via nuclear fission is, in and of itself, non-polluting to water or atmosphere. However, due to high cost of construction and operation, the cost per megawatt is comparable to other forms of energy like wind or solar.
