I need an equation or equations to help me find out how many pounds of sand I will need to fill my fish tank and so I can determine how much it will cost me.

The tank measures 71 inches in length and 18 inches in width. I want to know how much sand I will need for a 3, 4, 5, and 6 inch base.

To find out how many pounds of sand is required, we first need to compute the volume of sand for each of the cases.
The length and width of the tank is common for all cases. Only the height of the base varies.
Length of the tank (L) = 71 inches
Width of the tank (W) = 18 inches
    Volume Calculations:
Case 1: 3 inch base of sand
    Height of base (H) = 3 inches.
Volume of the sand in the fish tank (V) = Length x Width x Height
    = 71 x 18 x 3
    = 3834 cubic inches

    Case 2: 4 inch base of ...

    Solution Summary

This shows how to figure out how many pounds of sand it takes to fill a fish tank.
