The use of crime mapping in policing has been instrumental as a crime reduction tool because it enables police the autonomy to map a myriad of important issues pertinent to the success of policing including quality-of-life complaints, car thefts, serial crimes such as burglaries, homicides, and many other crime trends that will give departments insight into the "hotspots" within their jurisdiction in regard to criminal behavior. The significance of the use of crime mapping is predicated upon the ability of police departments to appropriate their resources and approaches to crime in a strategic manner toward the crime patterns that are evident within the statistics found from crime mapping. This enables police to shore up areas of high crime with more police to provide deterrence for further criminal behavior and apprehend more suspects from these hotspots.

In addition, the use of crime mapping affords officers the capability to work with community groups using community policing to develop the best approaches for solving neighborhood crimes that are most prevalent. Utilizing technologies such as Regional Crime Analysis Geographic Information System (RCAGIS); crime mapping provides great analysis and reporting tools for police to serve as an important linkage between the sharing of information across police jurisdictions. Police are provided the ability to query, view, and analyze crimes outside of their own jurisdiction, which can assist in apprehending serial offenders.

Crime mapping seeks to address cluster crimes such as robberies, rapes, burglaries, and other offenses that represent high incidences of criminal behavior. Detectives, beat officers, and administrative personnel are able to generate informative maps and reports based upon cluster analyses, pattern analyses, linkage analyses, and forecasting to detect offender's movement patterns. Crimes such as auto theft, which can be tracked using these maps, can be targeted better because of the computer analysis of high prone areas.
