Introduction

It is claimed that the current interwoven dependency between the US and China in terms of economic and political exchange is a Thucydides trap. A Thucydides trap is that tendency or likelihood of conflict or war when an emerging power (in this case, China), threatens the position of an existing great power or hegemon (in this case, the US) (Allison, 2015). Allison (Allison, 2015) compares this to the eventual conflict between Athens and Sparta when the rising Athenian power threatened the hegemony of the established military state of Sparta, leading to the Peloponnesian War. The current administration's approach towards China is fraught with both hard line approaches and soft power strategies, distributed between diplomatic actions, political and military approaches and counters as well as economic relations.
