At the beginning of the 20th century women's economic role in society was severely restricted and limited as the traditional male dominated society still existed and relegated women's role in society to motherhood and the housewife. Birth control was restricted or nonexistent for the purposes of controlling the economy by ensuring that women remained out of the workforce and at home raising lots of children. This would keep them out of upward mobility and in positions where they couldn't gain power as well Some recent historians have suggested that the government did not just control the access of birth control for moral reasons but as a method of controlling the economy, as keeping women as keeping the rate of unemployment relatively steady to give because of the perception that only men should work.

During the early 20th century women began their political battle for suffrage or equal voting rights, and this required many years with women and men working together before passage of the 19th amendment ...
