George Washington's 'Farewell Address'

When George Washington, America's first President (who is also one of the Founding Fathers and the military General who was the leader of America's Revolutionary Troops whose efforts gave America independence from its colonial master, Great Britain) left office, he deemed it necessary to give farewell in a manner that imparts his hopes for the future of the nation and also as a way to leave a good legacy for his political philosophy. It was not a speech per se but a letter. He wrote it in his second term as American President and allowed for its publishing in Daved Claypole's American Daily Advertiser paper on September 19, 1796. The letter as was written by him is addressed to, "The People of the United States of America" but was printed by Claypole with the headline, "The Address of General Washington To The People of The United States on his declining of the Presidency of the United States," but was immediately picked up by other papers in the young nation so that it was made available to all. By this time, Washington served as the President for 20 years. Much later, to make sure that its importance to the young nation is highlighted, it was published as a pamphlet with the title 'Farewell Address' since it was deemed Washington's valedictory speech after he declined a third term as president before retirement to Mt.
