    There are over 2000 mandates required by either Federal law, state law, or both that require health insurance companies to cover certain types of health care services and to offer coverage under certain circumstances.
    For example, some laws require the coverage of services offered by providers other than medical doctors, like fees for acupuncturists, nutritionists, nurse practitioners, midwives, social workers, and therapists. Others require coverage for services like in vitro fertilization, maternity services, smoking cessation, and prescription drugs.
