Resources in research papers
Assignment 1: Discussion—Evaluating Sources (Scholarly versus Popular)
When creating research papers, the quality of the sources you use is critical to the success of your investigation of the subject. Therefore, it is important to be able to effectively evaluate the appropriateness of the information you are collecting.
Post to the Discussion Area your response to the following:
- What are the criteria you use to judge the quality of the resources you use when doing research?
- How do you maintain the balance between writing your own thoughts and quoting or paraphrasing from your sources? What percentage of your paper is original?
- How do you maintain the balance among Web resources, print media, and other source channels, and what is the percentage of such content?
Write your initial response in about 150-200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Choosing academic sources requires the inclusion of specific criteria. There are detailed features that these sources should have.
Journal articles: should be peer-reviewed and scholarly. Additionally, these articles should be recent. This is so that the content is the most up to date. Researchers are consistently executing studies, which alters the accuracy of information. (Expansion on the potential harm that would occur by using. A very old article would a enhance your assignment).
When including sources it's important to balance original content with the quotes and paraphrasing. There are no concrete rules in this department but at least 4 to 5 original material per source inclusion is a safe balance. Additionally, the source inclusion should not be lengthy. 70%-80% should be original. Web resources, print media, and other measures should be used scarcely. Generally, maybe one or two uses would be appropriate depending on the length of a project.
