As a one-time single parent myself, this subject is of interest to me. My first husband passed away quite unexpectedly at age 48, when our daughter was 11 years old, and our son was 8. There are, I have since discovered, advantages to having a parent pass away, as opposed to having a divorce, separation or abandonment. My children knew full well that their father did not CHOOSE to leave them - he had to leave for reasons completely beyond his, and their, control.
