For the beginning English language learner, the depth of learning English is likened to that of a newborn child learning to talk; however, a big difference exists where, for the most part, we can assume the ELL has already mastered a first language. This author encounters children every day at the playground that are learning two languages at the same time, where the language in the home is NOT English but they hear it on TV and in child care and their brain learns both ways of saying a concept/word.
