Teachers can be genuine in their efforts to deliver a culturally-relevant and anti-bias curriculum, but still fail to produce a classroom where children are fully inclusive of others and prejudice-free.
What criteria will be most important to you evaluate your literature selections and activities in the classroom form multicultural and anti-bias? What behaviors will you be looking for in your students that indicate your program has been successful? Mention specific criteria and appropriate strategies and techniques that you will use in your own classroom.
When deciding if certain curriculum or practices can be considered unbiased, or culturally diverse, it's a good idea to look at the following:
Does the curriculum promote learning about diverse points of view, including the values, attitudes and behaviors that support different cultural practices?
If the students have opportunities to examine, study, and observe other cultural practices while in the classroom, this can foster a great sense community amongst students. The students have to be taught through various materials that accepting other cultures as equal to their own is a must.
Do textbooks and other resources used in the classroom include content and illustrations that reflect the experiences of people from diverse backgrounds?
