One of the most challenging and confusing times in a student's life is when he or she first enters college. The mountain of paperwork, the rigorous class schedule, and the shear confusion of not being able to find answers sometimes is so overwhelming that many students actually drop out of college before even giving it a chance. I remember personally standing in long lines with rude people at the other end telling me misleading and confusing information about where to go and what classes to take; it was a terrible experience. In fact, I even took several classes that I did not need because I did not have a mentor to guide me which cost me a lot of time and money in the first few semesters of college.

Every new student therefore needs to be assigned a mentor to guide them through the process. Today with this in mind, I try my hardest to be a mentor to students who are in need of guidance. I take a personal interest in their success, sit down with them and develop a plan of action, and monitor their accountability throughout the semesters to be sure they are staying on track. I remember how it felt to be alone and confused, and with this in mind, I am personally motivated to help new students achieve success.

What were ways in which the coach or mentor created awareness?

By mentoring new students, I am able to establish a personal relationship with them, find out their goals after college, and help them develop a course of action that will guide them through the rest of their college years. By explaining to them what needs to be done (and when it needs to be done), I am creating awareness in them and making it clear what they need to do to graduate.
