The basic difference between qualitative and quantitative studies is that qualitative (think 'quality'; how things are) studies focus on words and events, and quantitative (think 'quantity'; how many things you have) studies focus on numbers, things that can easily be measured on an objective scale of some kind. Some people think qualitative studies are easier because they do not require a knowledge of statistics. That is a mistake ; a good qualitative study can be extremely hard to do because everything depends on how well you and your subjects can (and are willing to) communicate.
