DQ1: Peacekeeping can be defined as the maintenance and preservation of peace between two or more parties, individuals or groups of individuals.
In politics the primary goal of peacekeeping is to create conditions for lasting peace. Peacekeepers monitor and observe peace processes in post conflcit areas and help ex combatants in implementing the peace agreements they may have signed. This assistance can include confidence building measurese, power sharing agreements, electoral support, strengthening the rule of law and economic and social development. United Nations peacekeepers can incluse soldiers, police officers or civilian personnel. The United Nations Security Council is given the responsibility to take collective action to keep world peace and security. Most peacekeeping operations are established and implemented by the United Nations with troops serving under UN operational control. In these instances peacekeepers act as members of their respective armed forces. In situatiosn where direct United nations involvement is deemed inappropriate or unrealistic the council authorizes organizations such as NATO or coalitions of willing countries to implement peacekeeping duties.
