Curriculum planning has been centered the development of a vision and mission statement for the school district. A vision statement explains the purpose of the school and the purpose of the school in the future while a mission statement explains the values that guide the school in the present. The following curriculum department for a K-12 school district has developed several curriculums programs, identified a rationale, and has synthesized it into a coherent program.
Curriculum Programs
The school curriculum programs embraces the core curriculum of literacy development, traditional mathematics, social studies, fine arts, Physical Education, World Languages, and science subjects (Alpine school district,2009c). In addition, the school district supports additional programs like the International Baccalaureate program, Character Education, Early College, Financial literacy, Life Skills, Concurrent Enrollment, and MESA (Mathematics and Science Club). These programs are governed by vision and mission statements that provide for the purpose and values of the school district.

The vision statement provides the organization with a future purpose and goal that matches the organization's achievement standards (Kirkpatrick, S., 2008). The vision statement is brief, to the point, and has the essentials of the purpose defined in a clear manner (Kirkpatrick, 2008, October 9). It is the direction for the organization should go into the future. It is usually abstract and challenging to the organization (Kirkpatrick, 2008). The vision statement is connected to the mission statements of the organizations.
The mission statement also includes a purpose statement, but it answers the question why do we exist and the reason for the organization's existence (Berry, Tim, 2010). In addition, the mission statement also embodies the values or what is important for the existence of the company. Moreover, the mission statement is to define our company as it is and what we do while the vision statement is about the company's future and objectives (Berry, Tim, 2010). The mission statement and the vision statement both are utilized by the Mountain school district to provide direction for the school.
