This exercise is designed to help you understand the complexity of environmental regulations. Simply passing a law is not enough to protect the environment. It must be appropriate to the circumstances, and be enforceable as well.

A country that has vast environmental problems at this time is China. You may want to pick a country with less dramatic environmental issues. China is very large with a variety of issues that vary in different locations. But for an example let's look at China.

China's rapid growth in urban population has resulted in dramatic increases in air pollution. Coal is used as a primary source of power production, which powers cities and industry. Car ownership leads to even more urban pollution. China's air quality is now considered the worst in the world and kills 656,000 people annually (Platt, 2007). Another issue is water pollution, especially in North China. Half the country's people have unsafe water (Economist, 2004) and cancer rates have spiked among rural farmers (Watts, 2010).
