Physical geology uses maps perhaps more than any other field. Geologists can get both descriptive and interpretative information from maps. Descriptive information includes things like bedrock geology, deposited sediments, landslides, surface material, etc. Interpretative information can be used as well, which is information inferred by the geologist, such as the position and nature of an unconformity. In addition, interpretative information can use to help interpret the history of events.
