Principles of information security
"Information security" the term refers to securing the information. It refers to the techniques of protecting our information from unauthorized access. It includes prevention of modification of information by the unauthorized users. It includes data integrity, authentication, etc. There are following main principles in information security:-
1. Information protection: - there are situations where the information is needed to be kept secret, i.e. nobody should be able to access the information. For example consider the case of university examination papers. Once the question papers are finalized, nobody should access the papers before the exam day.
2. Availability: - it is always better to hide the information, but it should be available when required. i.e. having correct information at the right time is must. Considering the same university examination papers example, if the question papers are not available on the day of the examination, then the information becomes useless.
3. Data integrity: - in the procedure of hiding the information and retrieving it, the retrieved information must be exactly same as the original information, i.e. there should not be any information loss or there should not be any change n the information.
