Trends in advertising and marketing change decade by decade, but none so dramatically as trends occurring in the past ten years. With the upward climb in popularity and usage of the Internet come innovative and interesting new avenues for advertisers to explore to reach potential consumers in a different way. Social networking has been an explosive trend in the past few years that does not appear to be decreasing in popularity. With every advance in electronic technology comes another opportunity to reach consumers. An example of this would be the method of targeting consumers through messages sent via their phone or PDA device. Another example would be targeted direct mail sent from lists created off of purchasing patterns.
Traditional formats for advertising are changing with technology, and many of these options are frantically trying to find ways to stay in the game. Yellow pages are an example of a media choice for advertising that has moved into the online realm in order to keep business viable and growing. More users are searching for names, addresses and phone numbers online than in print versions of phone directories.
A number of new trends are emerging that appear to be hot options in advertising in the next few years. One of the top trends is the alliance of tying a green initiative to a company's marketing program. Showing concern for the environment and the overall condition of the earth is good for community appeal and also covers a plethora of new initiatives being passed by city, state and federal laws. This is particularly true for any industry that might be involved with a product or service that is controversial or potentially damaging to the environment. A real world example of this is a company called Altria, which is owned by Phillip Morris. Altria appears to be heavily committed to keeping their company's missions in line with an environmentally friendly and sustainable corporate plan. They openly acknowledge that their products are dependent on the earth's natural resources, and as a result are working toward reducing the environmental impact of their businesses.
