Whole Foods is dedicated to sourcing food close to its stores, thus the chain of "more than 340 stores" (Whole Foods, 2013) and "$11.7 billion in sales" (Whole Foods, 2013) a has a fragmented supply chain. The chain features more than 2,400 natural and organic products under various own label brand names and is the eighth largest food and drug store in the United States. The chain has been adapting from being a regional player to a national force. As a result, the chain faces issues in supplying fresh, locally sourced product while also supplying private label nationally to its stores.

Thesis: Whole Foods faces unique issues expanding nationally with the chain's focus on natural, organic, and locally sourced products.

Whole Foods philosophy and business plan

Whole Foods labels itself as "American's Healthiest Grocery Store" (Whole Foods, 2013) and sells natural and organic foods sourced to "the strictest quality standards in the industry" (Whole Foods, 2013). The chain is committed to sustainable agriculture. The chain lists serving and supporting the local community as one of its core values. It also practices additional, advance environmental stewardship by reducing waste and consumption of non-renewable resources.
