What caused the death of the EV1?

Although many reasons for the death of EVI by the documentary film makers, GM and numerous other people, I feel that the decision taken by GM to kill the car, even though it was in demand, stemmed out of a self realization that the technology would not work in the future.

Let us better understand this thought process from the perspective of Economist Schumpeter who introduced the concept of "Creative Destruction" in his book: Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy.
