The current environment for public health nursing is affected by shortage of nurses. There is an overall shortage of registered nurses. The reasons are poorly funded public health system on the national and state levels, aging salaries, reduced nursing positions, inadequate number of nurses with bachelor's qualifications, and reduced nursing faculty. In social marketing campaigns there is no mention of public health nursing. From a different perspective there were 219 public health nurses per 100,000 persons in 1980, this number dropped to 158 per 100,000 in 2000 according to a report by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. There are fewer nurses that enter this field. There are several positions for which a bachelor of science in nursing is required. The overall impact is that there is a high demand for nurses with a BSN degree.
