Quality circles and self-managed (or autonomous) work teams are examples of teamwork design that have been used in many countries, including the USA. General Motors, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Xerox, Procter and Gamble, PepsiCo, and Honeywell are some of the companies that have used quality circles and/or self-managed work teams.
While our society values the individual, in large part it is due to the skills and talents each of us have developed, and our ability to think independently. Utilizing these abilities to be active, involved team members can enhance teamwork to propel greater results than an individual on his or her own.
Working as a team also allows team members to expand each individual's professional knowledge through collaboration. A sense of camaraderie develops, thus leading to greater happiness and longevity in the workplace.
