Component 1: Introduction and overview of the types of career paths in project management can take.

The research has shown that project managers don't possess a set career path as this profession typically has employees who gradually matriculate towards becoming project managers over time wherein they acquire an array of skills and project management responsibilities as they incrementally advance within their organization until they eventually decide to become project managers. This has been the recurring theme throughout the research provided for this summary wherein the employee's experiences with a variety of roles and duties throughout the company over the course of their employment eventually facilitates their acceptance as a project manager with some employees deciding to take the initiative to officially accept the title of project manager while others are asked to do so by their companies.

Employees eventually acquire expertise and knowledge in various areas that helps secure their role as an integrative part of the company's future plans and projects, which ensures that they will be capable of serving the vital role of a project manager. Unfortunately, there is a dearth in research regarding the careers and career paths that project managers take, but this is being addressed as a result of the increasingly vital role that project managers play throughout the entire spectrum of companies in all business sectors. This has led to more research being conducted on project management careers to better understand the motivations, goals, and satisfaction of project managers who often lack formal positions and must be able to successfully carry out many different roles for temporary assignments and projects.

Project managers must evolve into their roles based upon their acquisition of specific talents and training that eventually allows them to become effective project managers through trial and error. Therefore, project management tends to emerge within an employees' "career" choice as they gradually attain different levels of expertise with various roles within the company as most project managers don't plan to become project managers ...
