Organizational Culture and Behavior

According to Edgar Schein, a prominent theorist of organizational culture, "The culture of a group a pattern of shared basic assumptions that the group learned as it evolved its problems of external adaptation and internal integration, that has worked well enough to be considered valid and therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those problems." (Schein 373-374)

Collectively, organizational culture can also be defined as a collection of values and norms shared by people and groups in an organization that affect and control the way each of them interact with each other and with stakeholders outside the organization. Organizational culture is also sometimes known as 'corporate culture' which is also often called 'the unique character of an organization' that embodies the vision and mission of the company, its values that influence the ethical standards as well as the managerial behavior within a corporation. The culture of an organization is greatly affected by senior management who will always try to determine the corporate culture of an organization by imposing and modeling corporate standards of behavior and values that reflect the objectives of the organization. Additionally, the work-groups within the organization have their own behavior and way of interacting with each other that affect the whole system.

Organizational Behavior is the study and application of the ideas and knowledge on how people, as individuals and in groups, act in organizations through the use of a system approach. The purpose of the systems approach is to build better relationships by interpreting people-organization relationships in the perspective of the whole person, whole group, whole institution, and the whole social system and by achieving the objectives of the employees, organization and other social objectives. Organizational behavior covers a wide range of topics ranging from human behavior, leadership, change, teams, etc.
