1.Departmentalization

According to Allan (1998), departmentalization is the first step in the organizing process after reviewing the plans. For example, once jobs have been classified through work specialization, they are grouped so those common tasks can be coordinated. Departmentalization is the basis on which work or individuals are grouped into manageable units of common tasks. Thus, it affects day-to-day work of an organization through the organizing of work or individuals into manageable units and common tasks, which make it easier for workers to work as a team e.g., common goals and objectives and for the managers/supervisors to oversee the process (see http://telecollege.dcccd.edu/mgmt1374/book_contents/3organizing/org_process/org_process.htm).

According to Allan (1998), there are five traditional methods for grouping work activities in departmentalization, which impact the day-to-day work differentially:

· Departmentalization by function organizes by the functions to be performed. The functions reflect the nature of the business. The advantage of this type of grouping is obtaining efficiencies from consolidating similar specialties and people with common skills, knowledge and orientations together in common units.

· Departmentalization by product assembles all functions needed to make and market a particular product are placed under one executive. For instance, major department stores are structured around product groups such as home accessories, appliances, women's clothing, men's clothing, and children's clothing.
