Warehouse Efficiency

1) What is your opinion on KELLY's ANSWER to the Question below? Be sure to make a good argument for your position and support your response with evidence from a resource.

KELLY's ANSWER:

There are many important factors to using warehouse space effectively. For beginners the warehouse should be marked clearly with location designators for items, this way it will be easy to find specifically what you are looking for. There should also be a separate area for bulk storage and if items need to be stored outside they need to have storage security and cover if need be. There are many items that become ruined outside if they are not properly stored. The docking area should be clear for loading and unloading with enough space to maneuver items around to their designated locations. Storing items that are moved on a continuous basis near the loading dock will save time, while moving items not moved as much towards the back of the warehouse will free up more space for new inventory. Keeping a clear path through the aisles is very important not only for hazard concerns but also so the forklifts and pallet jacks are able to move freely through this area. Keeping the warehouse organized and placing items where they belong will maximize the overall space.

The warehouse design is one part of the greater puzzle. The correct storage design has a lot to do with warehouse efficiency. Pallets are a common space-savings mechanism for a warehouse but many warehouses also contain boxes of ready-to-ship products or large appliances for which pallets are impractical. Effective inventory management helps keep things running smoothly. Warehouses are large spaces and especially once they are equipped with shelving. Having a good management system that pinpoints where everything is and where new products should go can save a lot of time and hassle.
