Marketing is defined as the process of promoting, distributing, and selling a product or a service. Marketing is the function that determines which products are of interest to the customers and uses communications, distribution and product development to achieve sales objectives.
The advantage of incorporating marketing function into sales is that there is an alignment of the marketing mix element leading to synergies and leveraging the sales function. The disadvantage is that some functions of marketing may detract from the objectives of the sales functions.
Actually, sales is a part of marketing and not visa-versa as the question is suggesting. Sales is one of the functions of marketing. If the sales organization or its manager reports to the marketing manager there is no need to include marketing as a part of the sales organization.
