1)self completion - a participant fills out a survey on their own - this could be pen-and-paper or online
2) interview - an unbiased interviewer will ask question in order to understand the problem. This could be done face-to-face or by telephone
3)focus group - a moderator asks a group of people about a problem or issue and the conversations that are generated are recorded and analyzed
4)experimental - here you actually create an experiment to perhaps assess how much a customer likes/dislikes a particular product. A blind taste test would be one example.
5) Observational - here, the market researcher tries to evaluate what is happening naturally. They try to blend into the crowd so that the participants are unaware that they are being watched. This way, consumer's true behavior could be assessed. An example would be in a grocery store - if a market researcher wants to see how long a consumer spends looking at the eggs, they would observe people in the store.
