This is a very opinionated topic, and will always remain that way for a few different reasons. Many companies still use mass marketing. Those companies will argue that mass marketing is alive and well, and will continue to use it instead of using more targeted marketing approaches. If a company uses mass marketing for their product or service and it fails, those companies argue that mass marketing is dead, and that it is completely ineffective. In reality, what likely has happened is that the company used mass marketing for a product that wasn't suitable for it. This happens with breakfast cereals on occasion. Ever heard of Nerds candy? Years ago, the company created a Nerds breakfast cereal. Mass marketing was used, as the company was sure that a great percent of the population would want to enjoy the same great Nerds taste for breakfast as people enjoy (especially kids) as a candy snack.
