This is a very opinionated topic, and will always remain that way for a few different reasons. Many companies still use mass marketing. Those companies will argue that mass marketing is alive and well, and will continue to use it instead of using more targeted marketing approaches. If a company uses mass marketing for their product or service and it fails, those companies argue that mass marketing is dead, and that it is completely ineffective. In reality, what likely has happened is that the company used mass marketing for a product that wasn't suitable for it. This happens with breakfast cereals on occasion. Ever heard of Nerds candy? Years ago, the company created a Nerds breakfast cereal. Mass marketing was used, as the company was sure that a great percent of the population would want to enjoy the same great Nerds taste for breakfast as people enjoy (especially kids) as a candy snack. Strategic Marketing - Wal-Mart
I need assistance with the following marketing case:
Marketing Research, Markets, and Developing a Strategy for Target Marketing
Instead of or in addition to the markets it currently serves, should Wal-mart target the following markets? African Americans, the Affluent, Empty Nesters, Hispanics, Suburbanites and Rural Residents
Wal-mart has been successful because it has merchandized products that can be mass marketed (products that appeal to anyone and everyone) and has attained the buying power to support very low pricing of those products. As opposed to mass marketing, other retailers have followed the principles of target marketing where the merchandized products have limited appeal in that they are considered as appropriate to subsets of a total population. Recent articles in the popular press point out that Wal-mart is finding it hard to grow by opening new stores and is considering targeting African Americans, the Affluent, Empty Nesters, Hispanics, Suburbanites and Rural Residents.
I am required to compose a 3 page report on this subject. It must contain an introduction, body, and conclusion.
