Perception of the other party in the negotiation plays a very major role in the negotiation process. In order to successfully negotiate, one needs to understand background of the other party in terms of their ethnicity, gender, culture and the manner in which they view the world. In simple terms, we need to clearly perceive how the other party views the world, the scenario or the negotiation situation or other things in life, as influenced by their culture, customs, business practices, life experiences, etc.

Each negotiation situation is unique and each individual's or negotiating party's perception is different and thus, a successful negotiation needs to empathize and look at things from other party's viewpoint or perception to gain a better idea of the negotiation situation.
