The tools that an organization may use to help identify barriers are metrics related to leadership & organization, process & tools, organizational structure, and organizational culture. The metrics measure the performance of each of these four factors from the perspective of innovation(a). For example, the leadership & organization gives importance to day to day running of the business but not to innovation. Consider process & tools. If the processes are too restrictive and the employees are not given the required tools to succeed they will not be successful. Metrics that evaluate process & tools from the innovative perspective help identify barriers to innovation. Similarly, metrics that assess organizational structure from the perspective of innovation help identify weaknesses in organizational structure that prevent innovation (b). For example, if a company has well-defined hierarchical structure where the roles and responsibilities of every employee are clearly defined and there is strict vertical reporting relationship the structure may stifle innovation. Finally, metrics that assess the organizational culture from the point of view of innovation will help identify culture related barriers to innovation in the organization. For example, if a company has a culture where errors become the center of focus and criticism, there will be little creativity and innovation. The metrics that evaluate the four areas from the perspective of innovation will help identify the barriers to innovation.
