// Leadership is known as the art of influencing others. This is an important trait of the manager. Various authors have given their views on the topic. The upcoming section is discussing about the definition of the leadership given by two scholars, Murphy and Bass. The scholars have given their views about the topic that are slightly contrasted in nature. The section is trying to find out the contrasting characteristics of the theories of this authors.//

According to Murphy, basically, leadership is an ultimate phenomenon for a formal and informal organization. As per the definition given by Murphy, leadership can be considered as the set of activities that are carried out in order to influence the actions of individuals within an organization, so that the organization can achieve its predetermined organizational goals and objectives in an efficient and effective manner (Murphy, 1996).

In order to elaborate leadership, Bass also explained leadership in a slightly different manner. Bass has given a technical definition of leadership. According to him, simply leadership is an exercise of influencing the people in a group context. The author also added that there are three ways available for a person if he wants to be leader. These ways are discussed below:

(I) A person can lead people through his natural personality traits

(ii) Due to some crisis or event, the person can build extraordinary leadership qualities in him.

(iii) People can learn leadership skills, to be an effective leader (Bass, 1990).

These two theories seemed to be contrast in nature. The definition of leadership given by Murphy emphasizes on the actions of the individuals with in the organization, whereas, Bass considered, it in context to the group of people. Moreover, Murphy clearly distinguishes between the managers and leaders, but Bass didn't go with this type of classification.
