Mert and Samantha are both hourly employees in the finishing department. They work under Grayson, the first shift finishing foreman. Jake is the second shift foreman.

Mert constantly complains that Samantha is trying to get her to quit or fired so that Samantha's friend can be employed in Mert's job. Mert says Samantha has bullied and harassed her. Mert thinks it is because Mert helped in union organizing activities last year.

Mert says that Samantha complains about anything that Mert does and constantly tells her to quit because no one wants her there. Mert alleges that Samantha deliberately does not pass on crucial information about day-to-day work, which then creates the impression that Mert is underperforming in her role.

Mert has raised concerns about her treatment from Samantha on many occasions with Grayson, her foreman, who had simply told her to deal with the matter herself.

Mert says she is stressed out and alleges that things came to a head when Samantha had spent the whole day picking on Mert, making her cry. Samantha repeatedly told her that she is not wanted on the finishing team and should quit.

Mert cannot afford to be without a job and does not see why she should be forced out of her job. She goes home and decides that she is too upset to go to work the following day and she calls in the same day. She tells the next shift's foreman, Jake, that she is frightened to go to work the next day because she would be picked on.

Jake says he is aware of what has been alleged and thought it had been dealt with by Grayson months ago. He advised her that she should not go to work the next day and the he would speak to Grayson.

Mert does as she has been instructed, and missed the next day of work. When she returned the following day Grayson called her into the office to ask why she was not at work and why she had not called ito speak to him directly to report her absence.

Mert is told that because she has not complied with the call-in policy she would get a ding on her attendance record. Mert explained that she called and talked to Jake who was aware of what had happened and had advised her not to go into work that next day

Grayson laughs and tells Mert and that the department had bets on whether she would be at work the day after she had been crying and that because of her failure to attend, Grayson and Jake had each won $30.

Mert tells Grayson that she is going to file a grievance with the union because she does not think the way she has been treated is right.

Grayson tells Mert that if she files a grievance she will be fired for insubordination. Instead, she should just knuckle down and do her work.

Grayson thinks that Mert is the problem, not anyone else.

Mert is vey upset and decides that enough is enough. She files a formal grievance with the union about this situation.
