To understand the importance of metrics in measuring organizational effectiveness regarding knowledge management, you must first possess an understanding of knowledge management. KM is predicated upon the ability of the organization to create, organize, apply, and most importantly transfer knowledge to employees who must utilize this knowledge to complete the objectives and goals for the organization. When attempting to measure whether the organization has effectively applied and transferred knowledge through management techniques that help to cultivate an organizational environment conducive to effective knowledge management, the objective that is to determine if the organization has reached KM maturity. KM maturity will ensure that the organization has reached the benchmarks that enables the organization to determine that the necessary ability to engage in the correct decision-making is held by all employees.

When determining the metrics to use to measure the effectiveness of (your) organization's knowledge management, the most pertinent variable is whether the metric that is used is capable of deducing how the knowledge within the organization is actually shared and used by employees as knowledge that is not incorporated into employee action or usage is worthless and not beneficial to the organizations' objectives.
