The operations strategy for medical house calls is to drive fast to house calls and schedule the right expert to patient. This operations strategy affects product design and process selection in two ways. First, the persons who make medical house call visits are experts in dementia, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, or arthritis. There are thirteen persons who are available on call. It has been observed that most calls are from patients that have conditions that can be divided into these four groups. My business has three experts in each of these disease classes and in addition, we have one expert who responds to mixed disease calls. Second, when a call is received, it is allocated to the expert in the field who makes the house call as quickly as possible. If all the experts are out on calls then the computer program used by the call receiver, runs an algorithm that matches the expert with caller based on the distance the expert is from the caller and the earliest time the expert will be available.
