Union is a combination of individuals, whether temporary or permanent, primarily for the purpose of regulating the relations between the employees and employers, or between employees and employees, for imposing restrictive conditions on the conduct of any trade or business, and includes the federation of two or more trade unions. Shortly after the advent of the factory system, groups of employees began to get together to discuss their common problems like long working hours, poor working conditions, benefits and services. Basically, workers joined together on the basis of their common interest to improve themselves (Mamoria & Gankar, 2002).

The basic philosophy underlying trade unionism was that through strength and collective support, the management could be forced to listen to the workers and redress their grievances. The weapon used was that of strikes, slowdowns, walkouts, picketing, boycotts, and sabotage. Trade unions should always abide by the decisions of tripartite bodies and make a major contribution for the maintenance of industrial peace to better the industrial relations (Mamoria & Gankar, 2002).
