Disciplinary processes are supposed to motivate and encourage the staff member whose work is either falling behind or is not being addressed in the quality manner the staff member is capable of providing. They are meant to improve the situation not make it worse. The focuses on the major principles of disciplinary action needing to be stressed in this session are as follows (TLM, 2004):
1) There should be equality in the disciplinary action meaning it touches everyone and should be non-discriminatory.
2) Incidents need to be investigated, documented, and then action taken.
3) All labor laws need to be followed.
4) Disciplinary action to be taken must be in writing.
5) If Union is involved, all rules and regulations must be followed.
6) Staff members will be able to state their side of the situation.
