Crisis Management Issues in Disaster Relief Communication

An emerging issue in crisis management is the successful management of communication in disaster relief. This has been a much discussed topic over the past fifteen years, particularly since large scale events such as September Eleventh, the Tsunami of 2004, and Hurricane Katrina. Disasters at this level attract global attention with the questions of "What can be done in the future to make the aftermath of these events run more smoothly? How can the agencies involved be more efficient on a global level?" The key to these questions lies in the communication efforts and obstacles of disaster relief, and how business continuity principles are applied.
Disasters affect every portion of the globe, often without warning, and usually with enough damage to devastate a city or country financially, physically and emotionally. Regardless of man's best efforts to predict or safeguard against natural disasters, they occur regularly and with lasting effects. Picking up the pieces after a disaster strikes is a daunting task in even the most advanced country, but when disaster relief is necessary in a developing country, the complications that arise are varied and many. Communication in disaster relief has been a problematic issue for over a decade, as humanitarian groups, scientists, military members and basic civilians struggle with the best ways to maintain communication in a disaster ravaged region with little or no communication.

Studies on major disasters around the world have linked communication issues and obstacles with inefficient disaster relief. There are numerous disasters that happen every year throughout the world. Many of these issues get major media attention and strategic analysis of the cooperation efforts by all of the involved organizations. These studies aid in the improvements for future relief efforts coordination and communication. Many of them get criticism for the efforts. It is imperative to have guidelines, policies, standards and procedures in place to make the management of the communication efforts more effective.
