The dot com burst was a tentative peak of the stock prices that was reached during the period 1996 to 2001. The highest acme was document on March 10, 2000 when the NASDAQ reached its summit. During this period several internet based companies were started and in several cases there were large losses suffered. The dizzy heights to which stock prices reached and the large scale optimistic price increases of stocks is jointly described as the dot.com bubble.
What happened was that these companies did not have business prudence and focused mainly on increasing their revenues rather than profits. It sold investors the idea that investing in current losses will pay in future. When these companies finally acknowledged that their cash flows were far inadequate for the investment they had made the stocks crashed. There were other reasons for the crash.
