Traditionally, medicine has been a both a science and a calling. Is it appropriate to think of telemedicine as a business? Why or why not?

It is the shortage of primary health care providers now and in future that has driven the birth of telemedicine. Through telemedicine, patient can interact real-time with a doctor while sitting at his or her home. The science is so developed that several hospitals have integrated clinical telemedicine clinics in order to connect local and regional hospitals to large urban medical centers that house specialists. This interactive real-time communication helps small hospitals take advantage of specialist's opinion to optimize patient care. So, at one level it is appropriate not to think of telemedicine as a business. It is patients who are being benefitted the most by this development of science. There is a difference between actually going to a doctor and interacting with one over webcam, but for people who are restrained in some way or the other and cannot go to a doctor; this technology is a blessing for them. In another situation where a doctor cannot travel to patient's location, say in a rural location, telemedicine is a quick solution. Hence, as telemedicine practice, as it continues to grow would enable more and more people to seek medical opinion.
