Sharing the Joy of Reading

Our community is the home of "My Own Book", a charity dedicated to spreading the joy of reading to less fortunate children. The group sends groups of volunteers (usually teens) into schools where they read aloud a book, show off their library cards and describe the public library, and then spread out an assortment of books and let the children pick a new book out to take home. The volunteers write the children's name on a bookplate in every book, giving delight to the children. In many cases, this is may be the first book the child has ever owned. Sadly, it has been found that "61 percent of low-income families have no-age appropriate books in their homes" (Children's Literacy Foundation, 2013). This is an important charity. Reading books aloud to children helps to inspire imagination and a love of reading. Providing access to books is also important. Access to books has been shown to improve a child's reading performance as well as "improve attitudes toward reading and learning among children" (Children's Literacy Foundation, 2013).
However, it takes money to provide the books, so to help support the organization we are going to have a gingerbread house auction. The gingerbread house auction was chosen for many reasons. Each year during the holidays, a nearby culinary academy encourages children to enjoy cooking by giving them the supplies for a gingerbread house. ...
